Learning in the Flow of Work

WRITTEN June 18, 2024 Author: Patricia McCormack

In today’s fast-moving business world, it’s important for both individuals and organizations to keep learning and growing. At Improving Communications we offer interactive instructor-led training. Whether it’s in-person or virtual, we collaborate with participants to nurture and enhance their skills. But that is not a total learning solution.

“Learning in the flow of work” is a great way for employees to pick up new skills and knowledge smoothly as they go about their daily tasks. This boosts productivity, encourages a culture of continuous improvement, and fosters innovation. Additionally, a strong and supportive learning environment will help to create a workplace where everyone can thrive.

What is Learning in the Flow of Work?

“Learning in the flow of work” is weaving skill development right into the daily work routine. Used in conjunction with traditional training sessions, this method integrates needed education into their regular job tasks. This can be done in different ways, such as:

  • Microlearning – Break down tough topics into small, easy-to-digest pieces. Create quick sessions to seamlessly fit into an employee’s day, letting them learn without slowing down. For instance, a short video on a new software feature can be more effective than a long training session.
  • On-the-job training – Use this tried and true approach with tasks employees already do to teach them new skills. It might involve shadowing experienced coworkers, getting real-time feedback from supervisors, or rotating through different job areas. This hands-on method ensures learning is practical and can be used right away.
  • Digital tools – Implement platforms like learning management systems (LMS), mobile learning apps, and collaboration tools such as Slack or Microsoft Teams to further support learning in the flow of work. Digital tools can provide a variety of resources, from tutorials and courses to forums and virtual mentorships. These will all be accessible as needed, directly in the workplace.

Building a Learning Culture

To make learning in the flow of work effective, a strong learning culture within the organization is essential. An environment that encourages curiosity, emphasizes continuous improvement, and supports employee development increases efficiency and makes the workplace more pleasant. Here are three essentials for any learning culture:

  • Leadership support – Leadership behavior is modeled from the top down. Supervisors and managers must be part of the learning process, or it will be doomed to failure from the start.
  • Access to resources: Learning materials and opportunities must be easy to reach. Offer access to online learning platforms, create a library of resources, or partner with educational institutions. The aim is to remove obstacles and ensure learning is within reach for everyone.
  • Encouraging collaboration: Promote teamwork and knowledge sharing to build a learning culture. Have spaces for employees to exchange ideas, ask questions, and learn from each other to build community and growth. Regular events like “Lunch & Learn” sessions, internal workshops, or online forums can help nurture this culture.

Recognizing and Rewarding Learning

To keep a culture of learning going, it’s important to acknowledge and reward employees. Recognizing achievements encourages individuals and shows how much the organization cares about learning.

Public recognition in newsletters, meetings, or events inspires others by praising employees’ accomplishments in training and skill development. Incentives and rewards like bonuses, promotions, or extra time off show the company’s dedication to learning. Career growth opportunities empower employees to grow through mentorship, training, or new projects, and foster continuous improvement in the organization.

To Sum it Up

Integrate learning into daily routines, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and acknowledge employees’ hard work. This is the way to not only boost individual performance and happiness but also drive innovation and success within the organization. Build a flexible and resilient workforce ready for challenges now and in the future.
