The Power of Networking: Building Connections That Empower Teams
When you hear the word “networking,” you might picture people swapping business cards or adding each other on LinkedIn. But the power of networking goes much deeper than that. It’s about building real, meaningful relationships that help you—and your team—grow and succeed at work.
To start, networking isn’t just about what you can get from others. It’s about building connections with people both inside and outside your organization. These connections give you access to new ideas, helpful resources, and opportunities to work together in ways that benefit everyone.
One important idea we talk about in our Networking and Interviewing workshop is “UB4me.” This simply means that when you’re networking, it’s more important to focus on the person you’re talking to than on yourself. Instead of thinking, “What can I get from this connection?” ask yourself, “How can I help this person?” or “What’s important to them right now?”
By putting others first, you show that you genuinely care about their needs and interests. This approach builds trust and makes your connections much stronger. Plus, when you help others, they’re more likely to help you in return—creating a win-win situation.
So, how do you put the power of networking—and Ube4me—into practice? It starts with simple things:
These small actions show you’re interested in the other person, not just what they can do for you.
As you step into leadership roles, the more important networking becomes. Leaders can’t do it alone. They often need help and advice that their own team can’t provide. A strong network will open doors to fresh ideas and extra support.
But here’s something important to remember: when you ask others for help, you’re not only fixing your own problems—you’re also empowering them. For example, when you ask for advice, you make them feel valued. They can share what they know, and ultimately feel noticed and important. As a result, this simple act of reaching out can make them more confident and strengthen the relationship.
Leaders who network show their team how to work together. By asking for help and sharing ideas, they set a good example. This helps the team build trust and support each other. Networking creates a positive, team-focused culture.
Imagine you’re leading a project and hit a roadblock. Instead of struggling alone, you remember someone in your network who might have the answer. You reach out—not just asking for help, but also offering your support in return. This not only helps your project succeed but also strengthens your relationship with that person.
The power of networking is all about building relationships by putting others first. When you practice UB4me, you create connections that are genuine and lasting. Whether you want to grow as a leader or help your team reach new heights, focusing on others is the key to successful networking.
